I grew up where heating with wood was the primary way to keep a house warm. Before air-tight stoves, the amount of wood necessary was said to be equal to the height of your house. not true but a good story. The good thing is we could cut wood to long lengths then bring them back to the farm on our wagon. Because trees were cut in the very early spring and often in places tractors could not go we used a horse to pull them up to where the wagon was loaded.

I sure love our modern stove and the very small amount of wood it burns. I have no romantic notion to go back to the (good old times).
