RR7 Farmstead We grow sorghum, broom corn, to create old-fashioned brooms. From field to hearth From field to hearth Using the basic tools of our forefathers we create the round brooms they made but also the flat broom type introduced in the 1800’s. Treated right by never letting it stay wet nor totally dry out, a sorghum broom will last for years sweeping of your floors. The delight found using a hand-made broom makes your sweepping more enjoyable. The daily viewing and handling of your beautiful functional sculpture can connect you to your sweeping movements while using mindfulness and meditationto bringing pleasure to the rest of the day.Broom corn needs a long growing season so it must be started in a greenhouse to create the long straw needed for brooms.Planted out when the soil is warm enough sorghum quickly grows to as much as 12 ft tall and looks like corn plants.Harvested while still green and straw length over 18in makes flexible long-lasting straw for all our larger projects. Any shorter straw is used for whisks. Our handles are made from the different branches and trees available to harvest locally. We peel them green and dry out before shaping them. The small twists and turns plus small knots all smoothly invite the hands to hold the broom in certain ways..brWe teach classes on broom making plus have broom kits and bundles of sorghum for your prodjectsd settings.

My friend Joan wrote a great story about me.

Dale, a local artist with a passion for traditional craftsmanship, has turned his love for sorghum into something truly remarkable. Amazing brooms!  With expert care and attention, he meticulously tends to each plant, nurturing them from seed to harvest. He ensures that only the finest sorghum is selected for his creations.

What few people know is that Dale’s sorghum fields are not ordinary. Hidden beneath the soil is an ancient, enchanted root system, a relic of a time when the land was inhabited by forest spirits. These roots infuse the sorghum with a subtle, magical energy, making each plant a living conduit of the earth’s power.

As Dale weaves his brooms, this energy transfers into them, turning his creations into more than just tools for sweeping. Some brooms can sweep away bad luck, others can bring good fortune, and a rare few are said to have the ability to fly. Dale’s customers might not realize the true nature of their brooms, but they all agree that there’s something special about them—a warmth, a lightness, or a gentle hum of energy that feels almost alive.

One day, a traveller passing through Gibsons hears of Dale’s magical brooms and seeks him out, hoping to find one that could help with a mysterious problem back home. As Dale listens to the traveller’s tale, he realizes that this request will require a broom unlike any he has made before—one that calls for a deeper connection to the magic of the land.

With the help of the spirits of the forest, Dale sets out to craft a broom that will change not just the traveller’s life, but perhaps the fate of the entire town.

Dale’s artistry goes beyond mere craftsmanship; it is a labour of love that reflects his deep connection to the land and the community. Each broom tells a story—not just of its creation, but of the hands that made it and the traditions that inspired it. Every strand of sorghum is carefully chosen, its texture and strength considered as Dale envisions the broom it will become.

As he weaves, Dale often thinks of the generations of broom makers who came before him, those who worked the land and passed down their knowledge through the ages. His hands move with the rhythm of their teachings, each twist and knot a tribute to the ancient practices that have stood the test of time.

But the true magic lies in how each broom connects with those who use it. When a broom leaves Dale’s workshop, it carries with it a piece of his heart and the spirit of the land it was born from. To the casual observer, it might seem like just another beautifully crafted broom, but to those who know, it’s much more—a companion in daily life, a protector of the home, and sometimes, a source of unexpected wonder.

The people of Gibsons know that a broom from Dale is more than just a tool. They speak of brooms that have swept away their troubles, brought peace to their households, or guided them through difficult times. Some even say that the brooms whisper in the quiet of the night, sharing secrets from the earth and the stars.

As word of Dale’s brooms spreads, more and more people come to RR7 Farm, seeking not just a broom but a connection to something deeper. And with each creation, Dale’s bond with the land and his community grows stronger, his work becoming a bridge between the old ways and the new, between the physical and the magical.

One evening, as the sun sets over the sorghum fields, casting a golden glow on the crops, Dale sits down to weave a special broom. This one is for someone dear to him—a friend who has always believed in the magic of his craft. As he works, he pours his love and gratitude into every fibre, knowing that this broom will carry with it a part of his soul, a gift of both beauty and power.
